Feb. 23, 2005

In their first home meet of the season, Stanford hosted the University of Alabama-Birmingham this weekend at the Avery Aquatic Center. The Cardinal team once again captured gold in all four events to claim the overall victory.

In a great accomplishment for the team, Stanford swept the trio event. Samantha Bongiovanni-Duclos, Sara Lowe and Courtenay Stewart finished first with a score of 93.0; Poppy Carlig, Melissa Knight and Cassidy Ramage captured second with a 90.5. In their best swim of the season, Stanford's trio of Mari Maekawa, Hilary Homenko and Hae-Rin Lee finished a strong third after swimming to a score of 89.6.

The Cardinal team continued its dominant lead into the duet event with a convincing 1-2 finish over the Blazers. Claiming their first gold of the season, Stanford's duet of Stewart and Lowe earned a score of 93.6; Norris and Bongiovanni-Duclos followed closely at 93.0.

In the solo event, Captain Katie Norris claimed her fifth gold of the year with a final score of 94.6. Stanford freshman Katherine Norris swam to a 90.5, finishing in a tie for second with the University of Alabama soloist.

The home crowd fell silent as Stanford's "A" team took the deck to complete their final swim of the morning. The squad of Bongiovanni-Duclos, Carlig, Knight, Ashley McHugh, Elizabeth-Anne Markman, Norris, Lowe, Ramage and Stewart claimed the gold with a powerful and moving routine. Stanford's "B" team of Maekawa, Homenko, Katherine Norris and Lee placed third with a score of 88.5.

Immediately following the awards ceremony, Stanford flew to Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the University of Arizona Tri-Meet held at their striking outdoor recreational complex. Despite fighting fatigue from the previous day's competition and subsequent travel, the Cardinal squad rallied to claim victory in every event.

The morning began with a figure and element competition in which all athletes are judged individually on the same technical routine. Stanford's Sara Lowe finished first in the "A" element event, and Cardinal Katherine Norris claimed first in "B" figures.

Continuing their streak of excellence, the Stanford team claimed gold and silver in the trio event. Bongiovanni-Duclos, Sara Lowe and Courtenay Stewart earned a 90.8; Carlig, Knight and Ramage captured second with a score of 87.1. In another tight competition among the Stanford duets, Norris and Bongiovanni-Duclos won gold with a score of 91.6, while Lowe and Stewart secured second with a score of 90.6. Norris triumphed once again in the solo with a final score of 92.0.

In the team event, the "A" team of Bongiovanni-Duclos, Carlig, Knight, Ashley McHugh, Elizabeth-Anne Markman, Norris, Lowe, Ramage and Stewart claimed first place with a final score of 93.3. Stanford's "B" squad of Maekawa, Homenko, Norris and Lee placed third with an 87.3.

Stanford Synchronized Swimming will compete in back-to-back home meets on the weekend of March 5th-6th. On Saturday, the University of Arizona Wildcats club team will visit Avery Aquatic Center for both teams' final dual meet of the season. Then on Sunday, the Cardinal will host Western Regionals, a qualifying meet for Collegiate Nationals. As always, admission is free!
