STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford senior Shelley Alexander was named Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week and sophomore Ashley Morgan earned Pac-10 Special Performance of the Week honors for their efforts in leading the Cardinal to a dual-meet victory over UCLA on Sunday.
Alexander anchored Stanford's balance beam lineup with a score of 9.925 to give the Cardinal momentum in its effort to overtake UCLA on the final rotation. Alexander tied her career-best on her winning beam routine and also captured the all-around (39.350) as Stanford improved to 7-0 on the season with its second triumph over the defending national champion Bruins in two meets.
Alexander also tied for third on floor when she scored 9.85 -- one of four consecutive scores of 9.85 or more -- and was fourth on vault at 9.80.
This is Alexander's first Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week honor and 20th in Cardinal history.
Morgan wowed the packed house at Burnham Pavilion by adding difficulty to her routine, with a double Arabian on her tumbling pass. Her score of 9.925 anchored Stanford's floor lineup and enabled the Cardinal to beat the defending national champions going away, 196.200-194.825.
Morgan has scored 9.925 in each meet this season and her scoring average leads the nation.
Stanford improved to 7-0 heading into a dual meet at No. 4 Utah on Friday night. Stanford returns home Feb. 5 to face San Jose State at Burnham Pavilion at 4 p.m.
The Special Performance of the Week is Morgan's first of her career and Stanford's fourth all-time.
