May 8, 2009
Cardinal sailors Hannah Burroughs, Nick Dugdale, Taylor Grimes, Cole Hatton, Kelly McKenna, and Hayley Tobin were elected to the All-Pacific Coast College Sailing Conference Team for 2009. The six sailors were elected in a voting process in which each team in the conference could nominate up to ten sailors in each category; coed skipper, women's skipper, and crew. After all votes were tallied eight coed skippers, seven women's skippers, and seven crews were named to the team. Stanford accounted for a conference-leading six of twenty-two honorees.
In-conference, coed skippers Dugdale and Hatton most recently sailed B and A division respectively to a third-place finish at the Pacific Coast Championship. Dugdale, a freshman, had a surprising up-start year that included a fifth place finish at the singlehanded championship in the fall as well as numerous top five finishes in his division. Hatton, a sophomore, was elected to the team for the first time. Aside from his top finishes in fleet races, Cole was a skipper on the undefeated in-conference Stanford team racing team.
Women's skippers Burroughs and Grimes won both the fall and spring PCCSC Championships skippering B and A division respectively. Burroughs, a sophomore, receives the honor for the first time in a year in which she made a very successful shift from primarily crewing as a freshman. This is Grimes' third time being nominated to the team. The senior captain showed most recently at the Women's PCC's that she belonged in a different league this year.
Crews McKenna and Tobin sailed primarily with Hatton and Dugdale respectively. The two are driven to be technically sound in a position that demands perfection and consistency. McKenna, a senior captain, receives the honor for the third consecutive time. She has sailed with numerous skippers in her career, and she makes every one better. Tobin, a walk-on as a freshman just a year ago, receives the honor for the first time after making incredible strides in her crewing ability.
These sailors and their teammates will be competing for Women's, Team Racing, and Coed Dinghy National Championships from May 25 through June 3.
