IRVINE, Calif.-- Stanford's John Criste was the runner-up in the 100-meter breaststroke and Curtis Lovelace (100 breast) and Matt Thompson (200 IM) each won consolation finals on the first of three days at the Speedo Grand Challenge, the home to this summer's Pan Pacific Championships in August.
Criste finished second in the championship finals of the 100-meter breast with a time of 1:02.90, two seconds behind USC”s Kosuke Kitajima.
Lovelace won the consolation finals of the 100 breast, and was fifth overall, with a time of 1:02.78 in the first of two consolation finals for the four-time All-American this past season at the NCAAs.
Stanford dominated the 200-meter individual medley with four swimmers in the consolation finals led by Thompson's consolation win (2:07.16) and fifth place overall finish. Lovelace was ninth (2:09.83).
La Tourette, Bobby Bollier and Trevor Scheid all reached the consolation finals of the 200-meter freestyle, with Scheid and Bollier finishing eighth and ninth overall with times of 1:53.38 and 1:53.56, respectively. La Tourette was 11th out of the 20 swimmers. Bollier was also in the consolation finals of the 200 IM.
La Tourette and Scotty Korotkin both qualified for the finals for the 1500-meter finals, with La Tourette posting the third fastest time (15:50.69) and Korotkin (16:07.84) the fifth fastest. La Tourette is coming off an NCAA Championship in the 1650. Korotkin also reached the consolation “B” finals of the 200 free, where he was 14th overall (1:55.35).
The championships run through Sunday. Saturday and Sunday's prelims are at 9 a.m while the finals on Saturday is at 5 p.m and Sunday at 4 p.m. This championship event features a preliminary and finals round, placing swimmers in one of three finals, the top four and then two, eight person consolations.
