Gabe Jennings Qualifies For The NCAA Indoor Track And Field Championships In The Mile

Stanford junior Gabe Jennings automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday after winning the mile in an altitude adjusted time of 4:00.92 at the Holiday Inn Classic in Reno, Nev.

Jennings is the defending NCAA Indoor national champion in the mile and will seek to repeat his winning performance in March at the 2001 NCAA's in Fayetteville, Ark. Last year, Jennings became just the third athlete in U.S. history to win the NCAA Indoor mile, the NCAA Outdoor 1500 meters, and the USATF 1500 meters in a single season. With his victory at the Olympic Trials in Sacramento, Jennings qualified for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney where he was a semifinalist in the 1500 meters.

Freshman Seth Hejny finished third in the mile at the Holiday Inn Classic in an altitude adjusted time of time 4:08.45. Sophomore Jonathan Stevens was seventh in the same race.

Michael Ponikvar continued his undefeated indoor season with a clearance of 7-1 in the high jump. Sophomore Milton Little had a runner-up performance in the long jump with a season best leap of 23-1 1/4. In the shot put, sophomore Omer Inan threw a personal best of 52-1. Fellow Cardinal thrower Nick Welihozkiy had a personal best in the 35 lb.-weight throw with a distance of 59-6 1/4.

In the 800 meters, Mark Hassell finished second with a season best time of 1:52.84. Senior Leroy Sims placed sixth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.56. Sims qualified for the final after running 6.54 in the preliminaries. Sims also placed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 22.65. Evan Kelty won the 400 meters for the second consecutive time in Reno with a time of 48.97. Stanford football player Nick Sebes was fourth in a season best time of 49.94.

Stanford will next compete at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz. on February 23-24.
