Women's Competition: Seven of the nation's Top 25 teams in the pre-season national polls will be competing at the Stanford Invitational ... The list includes #1 ranked Stanford, #2 ranked Arkansas, #4 ranked and 1997 NCAA champion Brigham Young, #5 Wisconsin, #8 Kansas State, #10 Washington and #18 UCLA ... BYU and Stanford, which finished third last year at the NCAA's, have already faced off this year ... Two weeks ago at the BYU Invitational in Provo, Utah, Stanford scored 31 points to edge the Cougars, who tallied 33 points ... Julia Stamps and Lauren Fleshman led a 1-2 charge for the Cardinal, finishing ahead of a quartet of BYU runners, led by Sharolyn Shields and Laura Heiner ... #2 ranked Arkansas, #5 Wisconsin, #8 Kansas State and #10 Washington have been dominant teams on the national scene for several years ... Amy Yoder is Arkansas' top runner, and a many-time All-American ... Yoder won the 1998 Stanford Inviational title last year with a 5,000 meter time of 16:47, second-best ever on the Stanford course ... Jessica Dailey finished second in the same race at 16:49, the fourth-best time on the Stanford course ... Wisconsin has another large contingent of talented runners, led by Erica Palmer, who placed eighth at the 1998 Stanford Invitational as a freshman ... Kansas State has many talented runners, and the Wildcats have won the two meets they have entered ... The Huskies are led by Anna Aoki, the 1998 Pac-10 champion in the 10,000 meters, and runnerup last year, and Jennifer Smith, fifth in the 1,500 meters at the 1998 NCAA Indoors ... Last year at the Stanford Invitational, BYU won the team title, followed by Stanford, Arkansas and Wisconsin.

Men's Competition: The men's competition will be highly competitive. The men's championship section includes #2 ranked Stanford, #8 Arizona, #18 Alabama, Fresno State, and Pac-10 rivals California and Washington ... The Cardinal has captured its first two meets (Nevada Invitational, BYU Invitational) ... At the BYU Invitational, Gabe Jennings, Thomas Murley, Jake Maas and Andy Powell led a 1-2-3-4 finish for the Cardinal ... The Arizona Wildcats feature the duo of David Lopez and Micheil Jones ... No teams in the South boast a returning top three as strong as Tim Broe, John Williamson and Dean Fulmer from Alabama ... The Crimson Tide has an excellent chance at a Top-10 national finish, the first team from the Deep South to accomplish such a lofty ranking, besides Arkansas, since Florida took sixth in 1990 ... In addition to excellent team competition, also look for great individual results from such talented runners as Dave Bazzi of Washington, and Bolota Asmerom and Peter Gilmore from California ... Bazzi has been a consistent force in the success of the Huskies program ... Bazzi competed at the NCAA's last year ... Asmerom won the recent Fresno State Invitational, while Gilmore has been a talented veteran for the Golden Bears ... Cal, as a team, won the FSU Invitational two weeks ago.
