The Stanford Women's Lacrosse team hosts the Gaels of St. Mary's Saturday on Maloney field at 1pm. When these two teams met in 2000, the Gael's first as a varsity lacrosse program, the Cardinal came away with two victories, a 12-5 win at home and a 10-4 win at St. Mary's. This Western Women's Lacrosse League match-up will be the Gaels first of 2001, the Cardinal stands at 2-0 on the season. Stanford is coming off a strong start to the 2001 season with wins over WWLL rivals Cal-Berkeley and UC-Davis. After three consecutive WWLL titles Stanford is looking to rebuild its formula for success under the direction of first-year head coach Michele Uhlfelder (Maryland `91).
The Cardinal opened the season with a 7-4 win over Cal-Berkeley, with standout performances by sophomore goal keeper Rachael Neumann recording 16 saves, along with freshman Abbi Hills and sophomore Liz Lanese who added two goals each. Last weekend, in a 10-2 victory over UC-Davis, Lanese provided the Cardinal's spark on offense again, with a hat-trick in the first half. Stanford's defense, led by freshman Katie Grube tallying five caused turnovers and three groundballs, shut down the Aggie's offense, and kept them scoreless in the second half.
