Stanford Indoor Track and Field Athletes Named MPSF Academic All-Conference

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation recognized 24 Stanford indoor track and field athletes for their academic excellence as well as their accomplishments in intercollegiate athletics. To qualify for the Academic All-Conference team, a student-athlete must posses a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, must have completed at least one full academic year, and must have participated in 50 percent or more of their institution's competition.

The 14 Stanford women named to the MPSF Academic All-Conference team are sophomore Caroline Annis, junior Wilsa Charles, junior Melissa Feinstein, sophomore Erin Fletcher, junior Joy Goff, senior Mary Huang, junior Maureen Onyeagbako, sophomore Shannon Overly, junior Jayna Smith, junior Danielle Spurlock, junior Julie Tinker, sophomore Laura Turner, sophomore Elena Villarreal and sophomore Robyn Woolfolk.

The women took second at the Conference Championships and 11th at the NCAA Championships. Jayna Smith ran the 400 meter leg of the women's NCAA Champion distance medley relay team.

The 10 Cardinal men named to the MPSF Academic All-Conference team are senior Jason Balkman, junior Ray Bergstrom, junior Todd Beyerlein, sophomore Jamey Gifford, junior Michael Harte, senior Brent Hauser, sophomore Gabe Jennings, junior Thomas Murley, sophomore Leroy Sims and sophomore Christopher Sprague.

In the indoor season, the Stanford men took first place at the MPSF Conference Championships, and second place at the NCAA Indoor track and field Championships. At the 2000 Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Gabe Jennings was the NCAA Champion in the mile, and placed seventh in the 3000 meters. He also ran the 1200 meter leg of the distance medley relay which not only won the NCAA Championship, but broke the world record with a time of 9:28.83. Jason Balkman finished sixth in the 5000 meters and 14th in the 3000 meters. Brent Hauser took second in the 5000 meters and sixth in the 3000 meters.
