Stanford, CA - This week the Cardinal opens the 2002 season with a match against Mountain Pacific Lacrosse League foe UC Davis. Stanford takes on the Aggies in Davis on Saturday, February 16th at 1pm. Last season the Cardinal defeated Davis twice, first at the Stanford home opener on February 17th 10-2, then again at Davis on April 14th, 7-4. Stanford finished the WWLL season 8-0 and won their fourth-consecutive WWLL Championship. The Cardinal had a 13-5 overall record in 2001, which included a 16-11 victory over No.14 Vanderbilt and a four-week stay at No. 20 on the IWLCA poll.
This is the inaugural year for the MPLL, formed by five teams: Stanford, Davis, California, Denver and St. Mary's. After the conclusion of the 2001 season the teams broke off from the Western Women's Lacrosse League to hopefully improve the degree of league competition and help garner more attention for West Coast lacrosse.
The Cardinal is under the direction of head coach Michele Uhlfelder (Maryland '91) in her second year. Uhlfelder guided the 2001 squad to their first ever IWLCA Top 20 ranking and continues to maintain Stanford's reputation as the "Best in the West." Uhlfelder is assisted by Liz Kittleman (Union '95), also in her second year and two new assistant coaches: a two-time All-American Quinn Carney (Maryland '01) and a two year WWLL All-Star Amy Harms (St. Mary's '01). Head coach of the Aggies is Elaine Jones (Virginia '92), in her first year. Prior to coaching at Davis, Jones served as head women's lacrosse club coach and assistant director of compliance at the University of Southern California.
