Long Beach, Calif - The Cardinal closed its fall season with a strong fifth place finish against a stacked 28-team fleet. College sailing teams came from around the country to compete in the 2008 Rose Bowl Regatta hosted out of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club by the USC Sailing Team. In a rare opportunity to go up against many of the best teams from the competitive districts on the east coast in a relative home regatta in the Pacific Coast district, the Cardinal sailed well. Expecting strong winds and rain, the sailors were prepared for anything, but were met with light to moderate winds of 5 to 12 knots and only very light showers at the end of the day on Sunday.
In A division seniors Eddie Conrad and Carrie Denning posted many strong finishes to end the regatta in eighth place in their division. B division, sailed by freshman Cole Hatton and junior Kelly McKenna, found major success in Cole's home waters of Southern California. With consistent finishes on Saturday and ending the regatta with stellar finishes of 1-1-2-1-2, Cole and Kelly finished second in B division only one point behind first place St. Mary's. Overall, Stanford ended the regatta in a respectable fifth, behind St. Mary's, Boston College, College of Charleston, and Georgetown, once again beating out all the Pacific Coast competition.
Spring competition will begin for the Stanford team in mid-February. Until then, the sailors will enjoy a much-needed break as they get situated on the Farm again for the beginning of the winter quarter.
