Men's Varsity Eights Defeats Cal In San Diego

The Stanford Men's Varsity Eight defeated Cal in Saturday mornings Copely Cup Heat. Stanford posted the fastest time of the day, covering the 2,000 meter course in 5:57.6, followed by 6 time defending champion Cal in 6:00.01. The two crews will be joined by Navy, Northeastern, Penn, and Purdue in Sunday afternoon's final. Coach Craig Amerkhanian described the performance as "team driven" and expressed high praise for Stanford's finals bound Second Varsity and Frosh/Novice eights.

Led by Senior coxswain Zack Cooper and Senior Stroke and Captain David Banks, the Cardinal Varsity led from start to finish. Cal came into the race ranked second in the nation. The Cardinal will attempt to win the Copely Cup for the first time in 32 years of Crew Classic racing.
