STANFORD, CA - Stanford senior Justin Ewers (Phoenix, AZ/Arcadia HS) was named to the Men's Fall/Winter At-Large GTE Academic All-America team. Ewers, a backstroke and sprint freestyle specialist who led the Cardinal swimming & diving team to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships last week in Indianapolis, IN, carries a 3.59 GPA as a history major.
Ewers was a first-team All-District VIII selection, which qualified him for All-America consideration. The All-District and All-America teams were selected by members of the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America, from student-athletes in cross country, fencing, gymnastics, ice hockey, rifle, soccer, swimming & diving, skiing, water polo and wrestling.
Ewers swam a career-best 47.26 to place third in the 100-yard backstroke at the NCAA meet, and also finished eighth in the 200 backstroke and 12th in the 50 freestyle. All three finishes bettered his results at the 1998 NCAA meet. Ewers also swam the anchor legs on four NCAA runner-up relay teams (200 & 400 free, 200 & 400 medley) to score 67 points for the Cardinal. He is the 1999 Pac-10 champion in the 100 back, and swam on three Pac-10 champion relays, helping Stanford win its 18th consecutive Pac-10 title, the longest streak in any sport. During the dual-meet season he swam on 400 medley relay teams that broke pool records at both Stanford and Notre Dame.
