STANFORD, Calif. -- It will be difficult for Stanford Football to replace a starter who has played some outstanding football in his previous 23 starts, a young man who has been a leader both on and off the football field.
Quarterback Chad Hutchinson has announced that he will not return this fall for his junior season after agreeing to terms to play professional baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals.
"Chad has been an excellent example of the student-athlete in the manner that he has maintained his poise in good and difficult times," said Head Football Coach Tyrone Willingham.
According to Willingham, the good part for the Cardinal is the fulfillment of Stanford's commitment to its student-athletes to help them become well-rounded individuals, capable of providing financially for themselves and their families.
"Chad will now have that opportunity through his hard work, as well as his Stanford education, connections and athletics," Willingham said. "We believe this is part of our commitment to our student-athletes.
"I am ecstatic in the manner that Chad is entering professional sports but saddened with the fact that we are losing an outstanding young man and athlete."
