Jillian Camarena Wins Shot Put Competition at Junior Pan American Championships

Three of America's best junior athletes, including Stanford's Jillian Camarena, combined to win three medals on Friday during second day competition at the 2001 Junior Pan American Championships.

Camarena, a sophomore at Stanford, dominated the competition with a winning throw of 52-2 (15.90 meters) in the shot put. Yanira Hurtado of Venezuela was a distant second at 46-6 (14.17m). Camarena placed second at the 2001 USA Junior Championships last June with a throw of 53-1 1/2 (16.19m). Last year at Stanford, Camarena throw the shot put 53-9 (16.38m) at the Pac-10 Championships, #2 all-time at Stanford.

Other American medal winners were Keith Moffat, who grabbed the silver medal in the high jump at 7-1 3/4 (2.18m), and Jason Hill, who picked up the bronze medal in the high jump at 7-0 1/2 (2.15m).

Athletes from 45 countries across North, South, and Central America are competing in Argentina. This is the 12th Junior Pan American Championships.
