Sept. 22, 2008

New Haven, Conn.- The Stanford Sailing Team began its 2008-09 season with a mixed bag of results in competition for the Harry H. Anderson Jr. Trophy, hosted by the Yale Corinthian Yacht Club (Yale University) on the weekend of Sept. 13-14. Sailed in collegiate 420s, this fleet racing regatta pairs a Stanford skipper and a crew in a double-handed boat in two divisions, with the overall placing combining both division's scores.

The Cardinal finished 18th in the A division, and 3rd in B. Sailing in A division for the team was co-captains T.J. Tullo (skipper) and Kelly McKenna (crew), who are both seniors looking to have a solid finish to their four year sailing career at Stanford. In B division sophomore skipper Cole Hatton and crew Hannah Burroughs combined to earn some strong finishes, including a first in their third race. Senior crew Kelly McKenna stepped in with Hatton for the fifth and final race in B division to provide some light wind expertise.

This traditionally light wind regatta did not disappoint the expectations, with only five total races sailed in each division over both Saturday and Sunday, with frequent postponements to wait for more wind. This event is a great opportunity for Stanford sailors to check in with some east coast action, to see what areas they need to improve heading into preseason training.

The Roger Williams Seahawks won the Harry Anderson Trophy with 55 points, narrowly outdistancing Boston College. Led by former Stanford Assistant Coach Amanda Callahan, the Seahawks have burst onto the national scene.

The next stop for the Cardinal is in single-handed action on Sept. 27-28, where both the men and women look to compete in the Single-handed Pacific Coast Championships, where they hope to qualify for the Single-handed Nationals held this year at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.
