Stanford (1-0, 0-0 Pac-12) will be participating in a fall tournament for the third straight season when opening-round action gets underway Monday in the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off. The Cardinal hosts Fresno State (1-0, 0-0 WAC) on Monday at 8 p.m. while Colorado State and SMU square off at 5 p.m.
Monday's game can be heard live on KNBR 1050 AM and Stanford's official athletics website, www.gostanford.com, featuring the insightful tandem of John Platz (play-by-play) and Drew Shiller (analyst). The contest will also be televised nationally on ESPNU, with Mark Neely (play-by-play) and Miles Simon (analyst).
Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off
Tabbed as the No. 3 overall seed in the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off, Stanford will host first and second round games of the West Regional. The action begins Monday, Nov. 14, when Stanford hosts Fresno State at 8 p.m. in the first round while Colorado State battles SMU in the other game at 5 p.m. The winner of the West regional advances to Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y., for the semifinals and finals, slated for Nov. 23 and 25. The remaining three teams will play consolation-round games at campus sites on Nov. 21-22.
NIT Season Tip-Off History
Stanford is making its fourth appearance in the Preseason NIT and first since a runner-up finish to North Carolina back in 2002. The Cardinal also fell to North Carolina in the 1998 title game and went 1-1 in the 1988 Preseason NIT. Stanford is 7-3 all-time in the Preseason NIT, with its last victory coming against Florida in a 69-65 semifinal win back on Nov. 27, 2002.
Scouting Fresno State
Fresno State opened the year with a 55-47 home win over Illinois State on Friday night ... Tied 26-26 at halftime, the Bulldogs shot 52.9 percent in the second half and were fueled by Kevin Olekaibe's game-high 18 points ... The `Dogs closed out last year at 14-17 overall and 6-10 in the WAC ... Fresno State has been picked to finish sixth and seventh, respectively, in the WAC coaches and media polls ... Led by first-year head coach Rodney Terry, Fresno State is searching for its first winning season since a 22-10 mark in 2006-07 ... The Bulldogs will own an extensive scouting report of the Pac-12 by late December, having played five Pac-12 opponents with four of those games on the road.
Stanford All-Time vs. Fresno State
The series has been one-sided, with Stanford claiming an 8-1 all-time edge. The Cardinal notched a 55-48 win on Dec. 29, 2007, in the most recent meeting. Stanford has won eight in a row against Fresno State, with the Bulldog's only victory a 23-21 decision back in 1927.
