Cardinal Catalogue
The 29th annual Stanford Track & Field Invitational, which features several thousand of the nation's top collegiate and high school athletes, will take center stage this weekend at Cobb Track & Angell Field ... This prestigious meet, in past years, has included a cast of American Track & Field champions, including Gail Devers, Alvin Harrison, Kelli White, in addition to such former Stanford greats as PattiSue Plumer, Michael Stember, Gabriel Jennings, and the Hauser brothers, Brad and Brent ... Last year's Stanford Invitational produced more than 200 NCAA automatic or provisional qualifiers ... That list included 2002 NCAA champion Angela Williams of USC and Ron Bramlett of Alabama ... USC will again bring a strong corps of sprinters including defending 200 NCAA meter champion Natasha Mayers and All-American high hurdler Ryan Wilson ... Several Pac-10 teams will be competing including Stanford, California, and Washington State from the Pacific Northwest ... Friday's action in the field events will be highlighted with long jump (2002 Pac-10 champion Milton Little of Stanford), and former Stanford All-American Jackie Edwards ... Grace Upshaw, the 2002 USA Outdoor Championship runnerup, will challenge Edwards in the long jump ... The women's javelin field includes Pac-10 record holder and 2002 NCAA runnerup Inga Stasiulionyte of USC, Eric Wheeler and Nicole Carroll ... Also look for top performances from such other standouts as JaWarren Hooker in the sprints, Jerome Davis in the 200 meters, 2000 U.S. Olympian and former Stanford All-American Michael Stember in the 800 and 1,500 meters, 2002 NCAA 5,000 meter champion Lauren Fleshman in the 1,500 meters, Canadian national recorder Jeff Schiebler in the 5,000 meters, former Stanford All-American Jonathon Riley in the 10,000 meters, Toby Stevenson and Scott Slover in the pole vault, three-time All-American Jill Camarena in the shot put, Eric Wheeler and Nicole Carroll in the javelin, and Kevin McMahon in the hammer ... One of the highlights of the Stanford Invitational is the Friday evening Distance Carnival ... Last year, several of the nation's top collegiate top times were run in the events ranging from the 1,500 to the 10,000 meters ... That included UConn's Dan Wilson in the 1,500 meters and 2002 NCAA champion Lena Nilsson of UCLA in the 1,500 meters.

Track Talk
Cobb Track & Angell Field has become one of the top venues for track & field in the United States ... Last year, Stanford hosted the Oracle U.S. Open and the United States Senior and Junior Championships ... Both meets are back on the docket this year, and Stanford has added another top event, the NCAA West Regional (May 30-31) ... The NCAA West Regional is a new concept to qualify for the Nationals which will be held this year at Sacramento State ... The top five finishers in each event will advance to the NCAA Championships ... Also on the schedule in 2003 is the annual Big Meet between Stanford and California ... Last year, 28 Cobb Track & Angell Field records were broken ... The list of records broken included those by Maurice Greene in the 100 meters (9.99), Alvin Harrison in the 400 meters (44.62), Jearl Miles Clark in the 400 meters (50.45), Liz Jackson in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:47.35), Martin Keino in the 5,000 meters (13:22.91), Marla Runyan in the 5,000 meters (15:07.19), Gail Devers in the 100 meter hurdles (12.51), Allen Johnson in the 110 meter hurdles (13.08), Lance Deal in the hammer (244-5, 74.50m), Adam Nelson in the shot put (72-11, 22.22m), and Jeff Hartwig in the pole vault (19-2, 5.84m).

Prep Potpourri
The top prep boys and girls from the Western United States will be on display ... The preps will kick off the competition on Friday with the girl's 400 meter hurdles ... Last year, seven high school meet records were broken.
