June 5, 2002

Honolulu, Hawaii - The Stanford coed Sailing Team got off to an amazing start at today's first day of competition for this year's doublehanded North American CHampionship. The three-day regatta began today in the shifty seabreeze conditions that the Cardinal thrives in; six races were held in both A and B Divisions.

A Division Duo of Dave Phillips '04 and Crew Kara Sweeney '03 earned a string of top 10 finishes, including a first place in the competitive fleet of 18 boats.

The B Division duo of Ted Conrads '03 and Amy Halvorsen '05 had an equally good day, also claiming a first place in one race.

Mid-afternoon scores had the Stanford Team in 3rd place overall, behind First place Hawaii and second place Old Dominion University. A tough set for both divisions at the close of the day dropped the Stanford Team to 7th. With three quarters of the regatta to go, the Cardinal sailors are confident that they can grind back to a top-five position.
