STANFORD, Calif. - The Cardinal lacrosse team will wrap up its regular season this week with three conference games. Stanford will first travel to UC Davis and California, before returning home to host Saint Mary's in the season finale.
Stanford takes on UC Davis on Wednesday, April 18, at 7pm, and Cal on Friday, April 20, at 5pm. Sunday, Stanford will celebrate senior day at 1pm when it faces Saint Mary's. Stanford seniors Anna Boeri, Emilie Boeri, Maria Fortino and Catherine Swanson will be honored before the game.
Stanford now sits in fourth place in the MPSF with a 2-2 record and will need to finish in the top four to secure a spot in the MPSF tournament. Oregon and Denver are tied atop the conference at 6-0, while Cal is third at 4-2. UC Davis poses the only threat to knocking Stanford out of the top four as it sits in fifth at 2-3.
Stanford can lock up a spot in the conference tournament with a win over the Aggies on Wednesday. The Cardinal are 22-3 all-time against UC Davis, including defeating the Aggies 21-9 last season at Cagan Stadium. UC Davis is led by Elizabeth Datino who is third in the conference with 44 goals. She has helped the Aggies to a 5-8 record overall.
Friday, the Cardinal travel to California with a chance to move up into third in the conference. The Golden Bears are 8-6 overall and are led by Alexa Rozelle who has a team-leading 34 goals. Stanford is 24-7 all-time against Cal, including defeating the Golden Bears twice last season. Stanford last lost to Cal during the 2008 regular season, but has won seven in a row since.
Finally, Stanford will host Saint Mary's on Sunday for senior day. The Cardinal is a perfect 24-0 against the Gaels all-time, including a 20-7 win last season. Saint Mary's is 2-10 overall and 0-5 in conference this season. The Gaels are led by Amanda Cross who has tallied 35 goals and 10 assists on the season.
Stanford is looking to build momentum into the postseason, especially with the Cardinal hosting the MPSF tournament. Stanford needs to secure its berth in the tournament first, but then will focus on winning the MPSF postseason title for the eighth-straight season.
After a rough start in the last game against San Diego State, Stanford scored the game's final eight goals and hopes to use that as a springboard for the rest of the season. Anna Kim and Emily Newstrom each scored four goals against SDSU and Newstrom added seven draw controls, which was just one away from the school record.
Following this week's action, Stanford will host the MPSF tournament on April 27 and 29. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA play-in game against the winner of the Patriot League.
