STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford junior Carly Janiga was named as the season's first Pacific-10 Conference Gymnast of the Week for her performance in winning the all-around title at the Cancun Classic on Jan. 2.
Janiga, who also won two events in the evening session of the season-opening meet, helped the Cardinal, ranked No. 5 in the preseason coaches' poll, defeat three other 2008 NCAA postseason qualifiers. Stanford scored 195.6 points to beat No.9 Oregon State, No. 14 Denver and BYU.
Janiga, from Paradise Valley, Ariz., scored 39.275 in the all-around and posted the best score of the evening (9.9) on the uneven bars, while also tying for first in the vault (9.825), and finishing second on the balance beam (9.825).
This is the fourth Pac-10 weekly honor that Janiga, a 2007 first-team all-around All-American, has won. She has been selected Gymnast of the Week three times and earned Event Specialist of the Week once.
Stanford (3-0), the defending Pac-10 champion, resumes its season Friday by taking on Washington, Sacramento State and Seattle Pacific in Seattle.
