STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford junior forward Christen Press was named as this season's first Pacific-10 Conference women's soccer Player of the Week. Press won the award for her two-goal, one-assist performance in Stanford's season-opening 6-2 victory at Hawaii on Sunday.
Press assisted on Stanford's first goal when her through ball set up Kelley O'Hara on a breakaway in the fifth minute. In the second half, Press scored her two goals in a five-minute span, which put the game away after Hawaii had narrowed the deficit to 3-1.
Press was Stanford's leading scorer last year with 16 goals and 11 assists. After her performance Sunday, she moved up to No. 9 on the school's all-time goal-scoring list with 26, passing Natalie Spilger (2000-03, 25 goals). Her assist moved her into a tie with Kelsey Carlson (1999-2001) for No. 8 on Stanford's career list, with 18.
This weekend, Press and the No. 2 Cardinal next play at Cal Poly on Friday (7 p.m.) and follow with their home opener on Sunday against San Diego State at 1 p.m. at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
