STANFORD, Calif. - Men's gymnastics assistant coach Brett McClure will accompany four members of Stanford's 2011 national championship team to Las Vegas to compete against members of the national team, 2011 Visa Championship qualifiers, NCAA student-athletes and other top gymnasts at the 2012 Winter Cup Challenge.
All-Americans Cameron Foreman and Chris Turner will represent this year's team along with Stanford alumni Alex Buscaglia, Ryan Lieberman, Sho Nakamuri and David Sender. Buscaglia, a current member of the U.S. national team, and Lieberman currently serve as assistant coaches for the Cardinal.
The Winter Cup, held annually at the Las Vegas Sports Center over three days, includes two days of competition featuring 91 gymnasts. The preliminary competition will take place on February 2nd with finals following on February 4th.
Performance at the Winter Cup Challenge will help determine which 15 men will comprise the U.S. Men's Senior National Team through the 2012 Visa Championships in St. Louis, Mo., June 7-10. Seven members of the squad have been selected leaving eight remaining spots that will be filled based on the following criteria: the top-ranked all-around athlete who is not already on the senior national team, four based on the National Team Points System, two selected by the Men's Program Committee and one selected by the national team coordinator.
The top 42 gymnasts, according to the Men's Program Committee's points ranking system, will advance to the final competition, along with the top three gymnasts on each apparatus. The all-around and individual event champions will be determined via a combined two-day score.
Tickets go on sale at the Las Vegas Sports Center beginning Wednesday afternoon. All tickets are open seating.
