Stanford, Ca - Donald Sage, the 2002 NCAA champion in the 1,500 meters, has been named a third team Verizon Academic All-American.
Sage, a sophomore from Elmhurst, Illinois, is majoring in Economics.
Sage has emerged as one of the top distance runners in Stanford history. Sage has earned six All-America honors in cross country and track in only two seasons at Stanford.
In track, Sage helped the Cardinal win its second straight Pac-10 title with participation in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters. In cross country, Sage was the Pac-10 Cross Country Athlete of the year, and the 2001 West Region champion.
Sage already ranks among Stanford's all-time Top-5 in four categories.
Earlier this year, Sage was named to the Verizon Academic All-District VIII Track & Field/Cross Country first team. Adam Tenforde, one of Stanford's top 10,000 meter runners, was named second team all-district.
Caroline Annis, who recently won an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship, was named to the Verizon Academic All-American District VIII first team, while Laura Turner, one of the top 3,000 meter steeplechasers in the country, was named to the second team. Annis graduated in 2002 with a degree in Human Biology, while Turner graduated with a degree in history.
The Pac-10 All-Academic team has been announced and high jumper Ray Bergstrom, Tenforde and Joe Urbanski have been to the first team. Bergstrom graduated with a degree Physics, while Tenforde, a junior, is majoring in Human Biology, and Urbanski with a major in History.
Tyson Hendricksen, Gabriel Jennings, Sage and Jesse Thomas gained second team All Pac-10 honors. Named honorable mention were Seth Hejny, Omer Inan, Sean Knapp, Milton Little, Steve Loughlin, Daniel Parris, and Michael Ponikvar.
On the women's side, five Stanford athletes were named first team all-league academic. They were Annis, Kitty Currier, Colleen Flaherty, Turner and Robyn Woolfolk. Currier is a sophomore who is undeclared; Flaherty graduated from Stanford with a 4.0 gpa in Public Policy/Economics, while Woolfolk graduated with a degree in Spanish.
