ST. GEORGE, Utah -- No. 11 Stanford beat Utah State 7-3 Sunday afternoon at the Canyons Complex to conclude a 5-0 performance at the Red Desert Classic. Stanford improved to 16-1 on the season while the Aggies fall to 5-5.
Stanford started fast, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Sophomore Robin Walker (La Palma, CA/Mater Dei HS) walked with one out and sophomore Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo, CA/Camarillo HS) brought her in with a double to the wall in right-center. Mendoza advanced to third on the unsuccessful throw to the plate. Sophomore Sarah Beeson (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro HS) grounded to second, but the second baseman threw home too late to get Mendoza, who went on contact. The Cardinal added to the 2-0 lead in the second. Junior Ramona Shelburne (West Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) beat out a two-out infield single to get things going. Senior Kellie Wiginton (Fresno, CA/Bullard HS) drew a walk, then Walker drove a ball through the right side to bring Shelburne around. Mendoza walked to load the bases, and Beeson made it 4-0 with a single through the left side.
The Aggies got one back in the bottom of the second. Sandy Taylor reached on an error and scored on Eva DeJarnette's double to right-center. Stanford countered in the top of the fourth. Wiginton walked, then Beeson singled to center. Mendoza and Beeson then took back-to-back walks to score a run.
Utah State got back to within 5-2 in the fourth. Freshman Maureen LeCocq (Woodland Hills, CA/Chaminade Prep) came over from second base to relieve freshmen Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA/Scripps Ranch HS) in then circle. Taylor led off with a walk and advanced to second on DeJarnette's single. Both runners advanced on a groundout, then Taylor scored on a passed ball. Stanford extended the lead to 6-2 when freshman Cassi Brangham (Clovis, CA/Clovis HS) led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run to straightaway center, her first of the year. Stanford added another run in the sixth. Walker led off with a double to right, moved to third on Mendoza's single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Beeson. The Aggies then moved back to 7-3 on Taylor's solo home run to left in the sixth.
In the circle, Sorensen struck out four in three innings to improve to 8-1 on the year. Sorensen has now given up only 12 hits and two earned runs over her last 32.2 innings, including four games against ranked teams. LeCocq allowed only one hit in two innings of relief before freshman Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA/Carlmont HS) came in to start the sixth. Nyberg struck out two, allowing only one hit, the home run.
Offensively, Beeson drove in four runs and Mendoza was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks. Walker went 3-for-3 and Shelburne was 2-for-3 for the Cardinal. Taylor was 1-for-2 and scored all three Aggie runs and DeJarnette was 2-for-3.
