STANFORD, Calif. - Wow what a week we had! Coming off an exciting win in Utah, we were ready to get back into the gym and continue making steady progress towards our ultimate goal of becoming national champions. One of our main areas of focus this past week was to improve our depth. I think it is safe to say that we not only achieved that goal, but surpassed it this weekend in our dual meet against San Jose State.
With our three seniors resting from the all-around this weekend, we had many new faces in the lineup. Drawing from the confidence we built all week, each person performed with an ease that was indescribable. We started the night with two huge vaults from Dani Ikoma and Nicole Dayton, followed by Ashley Morgan's beautiful Yurchenko half and Shelley Alexander's near-perfect full twist. Allyse Ishino anchored the lineup with her usual 9.9 for the event title.
Feeling the excitement rise in our home arena, we headed to bars. The sophomore duo Ashley Morgan and Nicole Dayton started us off with clean aggressive sets, looking like they had been in lineup all year. After five hits, Nicole Pechanec was able to perform her very own "Pechancova" release move! With that add and her beautiful lines, Nicole earned a career-best on bars with a 9.925, which definitely set the tone for the second half of the competition.
We walked confidently to beam, excited to have two more new faces in the beam lineup: Shona Morgan and Nicole Pechanec. Shona graced the crowd with her gorgeous artistry and cat-like ability that is unmatched. With six flawless hits, we proved once again why we are the number one beam team in the country!
Then it was time for floor. Wow. Incredible. With three scores over 9.9 and not counting anything lower than 9.85, we are working our way towards being the number one floor team in the country as well. SWG lit up the arena finishing with a season best of 196.975!!
After a very very exciting night, SWG spent a well-deserved day off laying under the sun in 70-plus degree weather. I sometimes forget it is winter. Gotta love California!
Thanks for checking in!
