Stanford Athletics today announced the appointment of Jim Young as Senior Assistant Athletic Director of Media Relations. Young, a public relations veteran familiar with the Bay Area sports landscape, will be responsible for overseeing the publicity efforts for Stanford University's Department of Athletics and its 35 intercollegiate sport programs.
Young joins Stanford Athletics after serving eight years as the Director of Public Relations for the Oakland A's where he directed the organization's public relations, media relations and community outreach efforts. He played a key role in heightening the awareness of the A's organization by executing an integrated public relations strategy incorporating baseball operations, ticket sales, marketing, community, and business operations. During his time with the A's, the team made five postseason appearances, produced two American League (AL) Most Valuable Players, one AL Cy Young Award winner, and two AL Rookie of the Year Awards winners.
Prior to the A's, Young spent 10 years as the Director of Athletic Media and Community Relations at Santa Clara University. He also spent two years as an Assistant Media Relations Director at the University of California-Berkeley and one year as a graduate assistant Sports Information Director at UCLA. A Bay Area native, Young graduated from the University of San Francisco in 1985 with a degree in mass media studies.
Jim Young will begin his new post with Stanford Athletics on March 10. In addition to managing the day-to-day operations of the media relations department, including a team of seven staff members, Jim will also be responsible for developing strategic public relations initiatives to enhance the visibility of Stanford Athletics and its many successes.
"We are very excited to have Jim Young join our team," said Chris Hutchins, Senior Associate Athletic Director of External Relations. "Jim's experience and character are highly regarded. His professionalism, integrity, and commitment to customer service have made him and the organizations he has represented very successful. Under Jim's leadership, we look forward to raising the public profile of Stanford Athletics, our esteemed programs, coaches and student-athletes at the local, regional, and national levels."
