Sabir Muhammad Wins Two Events At FINA Cup

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Stanford alum Jenny Thompson broke her own world record in the 50-meter butterfly Thursday night to conclude the two-day FINA Cup meet at the University of Maryland. Thompson won the 100-meter fly and the 50-meter freestyle Wednesday night, then had a record-setting Thursday. She broke the U.S. Open records in both the 100-meter free and the 100-meter individual medley, then, only 16 minutes after the 100 IM, she broke her own world record in the 50-meter fly. All events were contested in a 25-meter pool.

On the men's side, Stanford alum Sabir Muhammad won both the 50-meter flyand the 100-meter fly, placed second in the 50-meter free and took third in the 100-meter free. Stanford alum Tom Wilkens had the fastest time in the 400-meter IM but was disqualified. Wilkens placed second in the 200-meter breaststroke, third in the 200-meter IM and fourth in the 100-meter breast. Two 1999 graduates, Dod Wales and Matthew Pierce, also competed. Wales was second to Muhammad in the 100-meter fly and was fifth in the 100-meter IM, while Pierce was fifth in the 100-meter fly.

Also on the women's side, Stanford sophomore Shelly Ripple won the 200-meter fly, was fourth in the 100-meter IM, fifth in the 200-meter IM, sixth in the 100-meter fly and seventh in the 50-meter fly. University of Florida grad and three-time U.S. Olympian Dara Torres, who is training at Stanford with Coach Richard Quick, produced several notable finishes in her first major meet in seven years. Torres was the runner-up to Thompson in the 50-meter free and the 100-meter free, and placed third in both the 50-meter fly and the 200-meter free.
