Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford Cardinal could not keep up with the #5 Georgetown Hoyas in the East/West Challenge. Nina Pantano and Megan Burker each scored two goals in the first half to give Stanford the lead, but Georgetown came back strong in the second half to win by a final margin of 10-6.
Stanford was led by the tremendous play of freshman goalie Laura Shane. She stopped 14 shots on the day and stonewalled the Hoyas in the first half, allowing only two goals. On the offensive end, the trio of Nina Pantano, Megan Burker, and Sarah Bach carried the Cardinal to a 5-2 halftime lead. Burker and Pantano each scored less than three minutes into the game to give Stanford the early lead.
In the second half, Georgetown adjusted to the soggy field and played tough defense, allowing only one goal by freshman Megan McClain. The Hoyas were led by three players with two goals each. Allison Chambers scored two, including an impressive run up the middle of the field capped by a nice shot into the back of the net. Coco Stanwick and Catherine Elbe also netted two goals apiece.
Stanford enjoys nearly a two-week break early in the season. They host Colgate on March 18 at Maloney Field.
