The Stanford Synchronized Swimming team remains undefeated in the regular season with a victory in the Western Regional. Stanford competed against the familiar University of Arizona and University of Hawaii. Stanford wins with an overall score of 103 followed by Arizona with 73.5 and Hawaii with 20.
Stanford took an early lead with first and second place medals in the trio event. Sara Lowe, Elizabeth-Anne Markman, and Courtenay Stewart earned gold with a score of 93.5, earning the team 16 points. Sam Bongiovanni-Duclos, Melissa Knight, Poppy Carlig had a solid performance with a score of 90.33, earning 14 points for the team and a silver medal.
Stanford held onto their lead by the impressive performances in the duo event. Sara Lowe and Courtenay Stewart swam to first place with a score of 94.66. Finishing second with a score of 91.66, Elizabeth-Anne Markman and Sam Bongiovanni-Duclos swam a solid routine. Sara Lowe captivated the audience with a powerful solo performance earning gold and scoring 95.0. Gayle Lee scored 87.83 in her solo performance taking the bronze medal.
The team ended the competition with a strong team performance. The team performers consisted of Elizabeth-Anne Markman, Sam Bongiovanni-Duclos, Courtenay Stewart, Melissa Knight, Hilary Homenko, Taylor Durand, Debbie Chen, Poppy Carlig, and alternate Gayle Lee. The judges were positive and impressed with the Cardinals choreography and synchronization, which lead them to a score of 95.33 and the gold.
"After this weekend we are going to spend the next two weeks fine tuning and working on lift height & pattern precision," said Head Coach Heather Olson, "Our NCAAs are during finals week which will be a challenge with some of our athletes taking their finals on the road. This is the same situation we were in last year, so our team is prepared for it and these athletes do a phenomenal job of balancing both so I am confident they will be able to do it all well."
Completing the regular season undefeated the Cardinal are preparing for the much anticipated Collegiate National Championships. The 2007 Collegiate National Championships are held in Norton, Massachusetts, March 21st-25th. The Cardinal are looking to defend their collegiate title and become champions for the third year in a row.
