Stanford-BYU Series:This will be the first meeting between the Cardinal and Cougars and Stanford's first against the Mountain West Conference ...The two teams will face each other at Stanford Stadium on Sept.18,2004 to conclude the two-game series ... Stanford has played 16 previous games vs..teams currently in the Mountain West Conference and are 10-6 in those contests ...The Cardinal is 4-3 vs.Air Force,3-1 vs.San Diego State and 3-2 vs.Utah ... Stanford''s last game against a team currently in the MWC was in 1996 vs.Utah (lost 17-10).
Quick Notes:Stanford will once again face a team that has played more games than the Cardinal ... In the season opener,,Stanford's first game was San Jose State's third ...When Stanford's faces BYU,it will be the Cardinal's second game of 2003 and the Cougar's fourth ...The last time Stanford played three consecutive road games was during the 1999 season, the year the Cardinal went 8-4,won the Pac-10 championship and played in the Rose Bowl ... During that three-game stretch in '99,Stanford won at USC,lost at Washington and won at Arizona State ... Stanford''s last game in the state of Utah was on September 9, 1995 when the Cardinal won at Utah 27-20 ... Stanford fell behind San Jose State 10-0 in the first quarter, but came back to score 31 unanswered points ... The Spartans had 20 net yards rushing in the first quarter, but (-11)over the final three periods to finish with just nine total net yards rushing ... Besides a 2001 win at San Jose State,Stanford's last non-conference road win was its 1995 vic- tory at Utah.
The Head Coach:Forty-six year old Buddy Teevens begins his second season at Stanford after being named the Cardinal 's head coach on January 9,2002 ... Teevens ' 23-year career prior to coming to Stanford included 12 as a head coach ...A 1979 graduate of Dartmouth College,he had previously held the head coaching position at the University of Maine,Dartmouth and Tulane ...Teevens spent three seasons at Florida (1999-2001)working under Steve Spurrier ... Teevens was the head coach at Maine for two years (1985-86),Dartmouth for five years (1987-91)and at Tulane for five seasons (1992-96).
Utah Connection:Stanford has two players who are from the state of Utah, including one from Provo ... Starting left tack Kirk Chambers ,a native of Pro- vo,graduated from Provo High School in 1997 ... He was a three year starter on both offense and defense and was named First-Team All-State and First-Team Academic All-State as a senior ... FB Cooper Blackhurst is a '97 graduate of Brighton HS in Salt Lake City ... He was a First--Team Prep All-America who played tight end, fullback and linebacker ... Chambers and Blackhurst are also Stanford's two oldest players ... Chambers,,born March 19,1979,is 24 while Blackhurst will turn 24 on September 24 ...They are the only two players on the team born before 1980.
Young Guns:Stanford may be the youngest team in the nation ... Consider that of the Cardinal's 94 players,47 are either true or redshirt freshman ...Stan- ford has just 14 seniors and 14 juniors on its 2003 roster ...The Cardinal has a true freshman class of 30 and a redshirt freshman class of 17.
Offensive Attack:Stanford's offense against San Jose State produced numbers that showed clear improvement from a year ago:457 yards total offense,293 through the air,164 on the ground,27 first downs and 31 points ... In 2002,,the Cardinal averaged 311 yards in total offense,178 through the air,133 on the ground,17 first downs and 20.5 points ... Stanford''s 293 passing yards sur- passed every game in '02 with the exception of a 305 yard effort against SJS ... Stanford passed for over 200 yards only three times in 2002 ... In total offense,, the Cardinal's best in '02 was 563 against SJS ... Stanford produced more than 400 yards in a game only one other time throughout the 2002 season ... A year ago,the Cardinal averaged 20.5 points per game and other than the 63 it scored against San Jose State, its season best was 27 against Boston College ... Stan- ford currently leads the Pac-10 and is 20th in the nation in passing offense and second in the conference and 21st in the NCAA in total offense.
Stopping the Run:Stanford allowed San Jose just nine yards net rushing last Saturday, the seventh best performance by a Cardinal defense in school history ...The Spartans had 20 net yards rushing in the first quarter, but (-11)over the final three periods ...The Cardinal currently leads the nation in rushing defense. Total Defense:The Cardinal limited San Jose State to 270 yards in total defense (9 rushing,261 passing)... Stanford is currently ranked second in the Pac-10 and 19th in the NCAA in total defense ...The Cardinal is also ranked second in the Pac-10 and 11th nationally in scoring defense, giving up 10 ppg.
Powell's Play:FL Luke Powell began the year in impressive fashion as he caught 12 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns in the season opener vs.San Jose State ... Powell,,who was limited last year with an ankle injury, recorded career highs in both receptions and receiving yards ... He enters the week as the national leader in receiving yards per game (172.0)and receptions per game (12.0)... He caught touchdown passes from 20 and 30 yards out from quarterback Trent Edwards against the Spartans, giving him 13 career receiving TDs ... He needs two more to enter the school''s all-time top-10 list ... His 12 catches against San Jose State is tied for the ninth best single game performance in school history while his 172 receiving yards ranks tied for 15th ... Powell now has 95 career receptions for 1,732 yards and 14 touchdowns ((13 by receiving, one punt return)... His 18.2 yards per reception average is sixth on Stanford's all-time list ...A former First-Team All-American (as a KOR in 2001),Powell is the only player in school history to have three touchdown receptions of 75 yards or more ...He also has 17 catches over 30 yards in his career, which include two from 50-59 yards and two others from 60-69 yards ... As a kick returner,he is among the school 's all-time best in punt returns (51), punt return yards (561)and punt return average (11.0).
Captain Kirk:The leader of the Cardinal 's offensive line is also the only player with starting experience -senior Kirk Chambers ...With a young and inexperienced offensive line in 2003,Chambers is the unquestioned leader of a group that will need his maturity and knowledge to help it develop into a quality unit ... Chambers,,who is the oldest player on the team at 24,has started all 35 games in his Cardinal career and is attempting to do what few players in school history have accomplished -and that 's to start every game ... He has been the team 's No.1 left tackle the past three seasons (2000-02)...After an All-American prep career at Provo High School,Chambers signed with Stanford then spent the 1998 and .99 seasons on a Mormon Mission in Berlin,Germany ... He married Marilyn Ord on June 23,,2001 and the couple gave birth to their first child,Marianne Deniece,on July 7,2003.
Trent's Time:Redshirt freshman quarterback Trent Edwards made his Cardi- nal debut on Saturday vs.San Jose State and was impressive in completing 21- of-37 for 278 yards and two touchdowns ... He came off the bench in relief of starter Chris Lewis and led the Cardinal to 31 unanswered points ... Edwards,, who was listed as the team's No.2 quarterback before the San Jose State game, is now listed as the team's No.1 QB and has been named the starter for the Cardinal's next game at BYU ... He threw touchdown passes of 20 and 30 yards to Luke Powell ... In the second quarter,in which the Cardinal outscored SJS 21-0,Edwards completed nine-of-11 for 130 yards and two TDs ...A second- year player from Los Gatos High School,Edwards came to Stanford a year ago as one of the most highly sought-after preps in the nation ... He was ranked by some as the No.1 prep QB in the country in 2001 ... During his junior and se- nior seasons,he completed 279-of-373 for 5,064 yards,58 touchdowns and just seven interceptions ... His completion percentage was an eye--opening .747 ... He currently leads the Pac-10 and is 19th nationally in total offense (275 ypg) and is second in the Pac-10 in passing (278.0 ypg).
J.R.'s TDs:Sophomore running back J.R.Lemon has made a career of playing San Jose State ... He recorded the first 100--yard rushing day of his career last Saturday against the Spartans as he gained 103 yards on 18 carries while scoring two touchdowns ... In his career,,he has scored five touchdowns -all coming against SJS (he had three touchdowns in 2002)... Lemon has rushed for 188 yards in his career,172 of which have come against the Spartans ... Lemon took over as the team's top rushing threat after starter Kenneth Tolon went out with an injury ... Lemon responded by scoring touchdowns from six and three yards out ... He is currently ranked second in the Pac--10 and 28th in the NCAA in rushing (103 ypg)... He is also tied for first ((with Luke Powell)in the confer- ence and tied for seventh in the nation in scoring (12.0 ppg)
On the Defensive:The Cardinal defense, while limiting San Jose State to nine yards rushing and 39 incomplete passes, was led in tackles by two players making their debuts in the starting lineup ... So..OLB Kevin Schimmelmann and RFr.SS Trevor Hooper led the Cardinal with six tackles apiece as Stan- ford proved to be very active and aggressive on the defensive side of the ball ... Schimmelmann,,a converted safety who won the OLB job during fall camp, added one tackle for loss while Hooper, playing in his first collegiate game, added two tackles for loss ...As a team,Stanford accounted for 10 pass break- ups, including four by CB Leigh Torrence ,10 tackles for loss, one sack, one interception and one fumble recovery.
O-Line Story:The story of the Cardinal 's offensive line can be summed up in one word:young ...Senior Kirk Chambers is back at left tackle for his fourth season in the starting lineup, but the remaining starters are young and inexperi- enced ... Here are the hard facts::of the 16 offensive lineman on the Stanford 's roster,12 (five true freshman, seven redshirt freshman)have never played for the Cardinal, two have seen limited playing time (senior Mike Sullivan and sophomore Brian Head )and one (senior Drew Caylor )has received some playing time as an offensive lineman, but has been a defensive lineman the past two years ... Stanford''s current two-deep with game experience listed below:
Pos -Starter,backup (game experience)
LT -Kirk Chambers (35 starts),Matt McClernan (redshirt freshman,no experience)
LG -Ismail Simpson or David Beall (both redshirt freshman,Simpson started vs.SJS)
C -Brian Head (limited, first start vs.SJS),Drew Caylor (played DE last 2 years)
RG -Jeff Edwards or Josiah Vinson (both redshirt freshman,Edwards started vs.SJS)
RT -Mike Sullivan (limited, first start vs.SJS),Jon Cochran (redshirt Fr.,no experience)
Starting Tight Ends:A glance at the Cardinal's depth chart will find two starting tight ends -Brett Pierce and Alex Smith -and no fullback ...That's because the Cardinal is utilizing its talented tight end corps in its "basic"offen- sive formation ... Pierce is listed as one starting tight end with redshirt fresh- man Matt Traverso No.2 ...At the other tight end spot,Smith's backup is true freshman Patrick Danahy ... Against San Jose in the season opener,Pierce caught two passes for 33 yards while Smith had one reception for nine yards ... A year ago,Pierce and Traverso suffered through injury-riddled seasons while Smith came to the forefront to put together an outstanding year (30 receptions, 380 yards, two TDs)as the team 's only true tight end ... Now,,both Pierce (ACL)and Traverso (ankle)are healthy and, combined with Smith and Danahy, helps give the Cardinal four talented tight ends ... Pierce caught 19 balls for 258 yards and three touchdowns in 2001,but suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first quarter of the season opener last year at Boston College ... Both Pierce and Smith have received pre-season recognition this year as being among the top tight ends in the conference ... Pierce,,who has caught 29 passes in his career for 340 yards and three TDs,was a pre-season First-Team All-Pac-10 selection while Smith garnered Second-Team pre-season All-America honors.
True Freshman:Five true freshman played in their first collegiate game last Saturday vs.SJS ... FL Mark Bradford (Los Angeles,Calif.)had one reception 2003 Stanford Cardinal Football for 15 yards while David Marrero ,5-10,190-pound RB from Parkland,Fla., carried the ball eight times for 20 yards ...Michael Okwo ,a 6-0,215 outside linebacker from Redondo Beach,Calif.,recorded one tackle while Patrick Da- nahy ,a 6-5,230 pound tight end from Sarasota,Fla.,and Evan Moore ,a 6-7, 235 pound wide receiver from Brea,Calif.,also saw playing time.
Local Boys Make Good:The 2003 Stanford roster features three Bay Area prod- ucts who came into the program as walk-ons,but have quickly moved their way up the depth chart ...Redshirt junior wide receiver Greg Camarillo (Menlo Park, CA/Menlo-Atherton HS),who caught eight passes for 92 yards last season, had three catches for 30 yards last week vs.San Jose State ...Fifth-year senior Eric Johnson (Antioch,CA/Antioch HS),who is also a member of the Stanford golf team,is in his third year as the team 's starting punter ...Redshirt sophomore Timi Wusu (Palo Alto,CA/Palo Alto HS),who went to high school across the street from Stanford Stadium, made an impact on special teams last year and has put himself in position to make a significant contribution in 2003.
Walking Into The Starting Lineup:The 2003 Stanford Cardinal has four for- mer walk-ons either starting or playing key roles ...The group includes outside linebacker Jared Newberry (redshirt junior),punter Eric Johnson (fifth-year senior),flanker Greg Camarillo (redshirt junior)and strong safety Timi Wusu (redshirt sophomore).
The Need For Speed:Sophomore defensive back T.J.Rushing and wide receivers Gerren Crochet (redshirt sophomore)and Nick Sebes (redshirt junior)made up three-fourths of the Stanford 4x100 relay team that won the prestigious Texas Relays last spring in the third-fastest time in school history (40.25)...Besides excelling on the track, all three are expected to see an increased role on the gridiron this season ... Rushing started last week''s game vs.San Jose State while both Sebes and Crochet will be integral parts of the Cardinal's receiving corps. Georgia On Their Minds:Stanford has 94 players on its 2003 roster, and an amazing 11 have traveled nearly 3,000 miles from the state of Georgia to make their homes on The Farm ...The total is the second highest of any state, behind only California 's 28 ...Seven of the 11 are expected to play big roles this fall: Soph.DE Julian Jenkins (Atlanta),Soph.RB J.R.Lemon (Fayetteville),Soph. CB Calvin Armstrong (Decatur),Jr.CB Leigh Torrence (Atlanta),Soph.OLB Kevin Schimmelmann (Marietta),RFr.RG Jeff Edwards (Atlanta)and RFr. OT Matt McClernan (Norcross)...In addition, four true freshman are from Georgia:DE Emmanuel Awofadeju (Roswell),RB Jason Evans (Acworth),DL David Jackson (Dunwoody)and OL Amir Malayery (Lawrenceville)...The Cardinal coaching staff also has ties to the state of Georgia ...Associate Head Coach David Kelly coached at Georgia Tech (2000-01),Georgia (1994-95)and Dunwoody (GA)HS (1981-93),while defensive ends coach Peter McCarty was at Georgia Tech in 2001.
Defensive Experience:One of the strengths of the 2003 Cardinal is its overall experience on defense ... The Cardinal started 19 different players on defense in 2002 -and 15 of them are back in .03 ...The list includes:Louis Hobson (8 starts),Amon Gordon (7),Will Svitek (3),Julian Jenkins (1),Babatunde Oshinowo (1),David Bergeron (10),Jon Alston (5),Michael Craven (4), Jared Newberry (3),Jake Covault (9),MLB Brian Gaffney (2),CB Leigh Torrence (11),CB Stanley Wilson (11)and SS Oshiomogho Atogwe (11).
