Stanford, Ca - Lauren Fleshman, the three-time NCAA 5,000 meter champion from Stanford University, finished fourth among America's best runners on Friday night at the 2003 U.S. Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Stanford University's Cobb Track & Angell Field.
Fleshman ran the distance in a time of 15:27.68, her third-best time of the 2003 outdoor season. Freshman Alicia Craig finished fifth in 15:33.39. Marla Runyan won her third straight United States title in a time of 15:16.18, a Cobb Track record. Shalane Flanagan of North Carolina, who finished second to Fleshman at last weekend's NCAA Championships, was second in a time of 15:20.54. Shayne Culpepper placed third at 15:23.59.
In the men's 5,000 meters, Cardinal junior Louis Luchini finished fifth in a time of 13:38.77, his second-best time of the 2003 outdoor season. Tim Broe won the event (13:35.23), while Adam Goucher finished second (13:35.67), Jorge Torres was third (13:36.42) and former Stanford All-American Jonathon Riley was fourth (13:37.08). Stanford junior Seth Hejny finished tenth in a season-best time of 13:51.68.
In the prelims of the men's 1,500 meters, 2003 NCAA champion Grant Robison advanced to the finals (Sunday, 2:20 p.m. pt) with a fifth place overall finish in the prelims (3:47.13). Competing in the second of two heats, Robison finished third behind Jason Lunn (3:47.04) and Sean O'Brien (3:47.13). Lunn, a former Stanford All-American, had the day's best time.
Jill Camarena, a five time All-American in the shot put and discus, finished seventh in the finals of the women's shot put. Camarena, on her first throw of the day, recorded a distance of 56-6 1/2 (17.23m). Kristin Heaston won her first U.S. outdoor title with a throw of 60-1 3/4 (18.33m).
