STANFORD, Calif. - In a vote of their teammates Saturday evening, three Stanford seniors have been named co-captains for the 2012 season. Outside linebacker Chase Thomas, running back Stepfan Taylor and center Sam Schwartzstein will lead the Cardinal this fall.
A 2011 Sporting News All-American, Chase Thomas returned to the Farm for a fifth year as one of the top linebackers in the nation. He is a leading playmaker and emotional catalyst for one of the best defensive front sevens in college football. Thomas has 36.0 career tackles for loss and 20.0 career sacks at Staford in 34 starts. Thomas is a national awards candidate in 2012 for the Bednarik, Nagurski and Butkus Awards.
Stepfan Taylor heads into his senior year owning two of the three top rushing seasons in Stanford history. The senior running back has 27 career rushing touchdowns and 13 100-yard rushing games. Taylor has been named to the watch list for the Doak Walker Award and needs 1,263 yards to catch Darrin Nelson's Stanford career rushing record.
Sam Schwartzstein is a fifth-year center who returns from the 2011 Stanford offensive line that allowed just seven sacks all season while paving the way for more than 210 rushing yards per game. The captain who steers the Cardinal's offensive line, Schwartzstein is a preseason candidate for the Rimington Trophy.
