Boston, MA - The Cardinal women's lacrosse team, ranked 20th by the IWLCA, ended the regular season and its three-game road trip with a loss. The Boston College Eagles handed Stanford a 19-4 upset today at Alumni Stadium and would not allow any Cardinal player to score more than once. Eagle attacker Lauren Miller proved herself unstoppable, ending the day with 6 goals and 5 assists. This loss puts Stanford at 11-5 overall, 6-0 WWLL.
Sophomore Liz Lanese (St. Louis, MO/Mary Institute & St. Louis CDS) stopped a 7-0 run by the Eagles, putting in the first Cardinal goal with 7:54 remaining in the first half. But Stanford wouldn't score again until sophomore Lauren Dietrich (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights HS) put in a goal at 17:40 into the second half. The Cardinal went on the to score only two more goals, one, a minute later off a shot by freshman Abbi Hills (Lakewood, CO/Colorado Academy) and the second by sophomore Sarah Sawyer (Santa Paula, CA/ Thacher School) with 6:30 left in the game. Starting goalkeeper Rachael Neumann (Woodbury, NY/Syosset HS) finished with nine saves and was relieved by freshman Sara Shamos (Denver, CO/Colorado Academy), in her ninth appearance off the bench this season, who ended the game with 1 save.
This match ended the regular season for the team, they return to action next week when they face the St. Mary's Gaels in the WWLL North Playoffs. The teams meet at St. Mary's stadium in Moraga on Saturday, April 28 at 12pm (PT). The Cardinal has defeated St. Mary's twice this season, including the first game of this week's road-trip when they handed the Gaels a 15-7 loss.
