No. 10 Syracuse Tops Stanford in 1st Annual East/West Challenge

Stanford, CA - Playing for the first time at Stanford Stadium, the Stanford Women's Lacrosse team dropped their first home game of the season 15-9 to the #10 Syracuse Orangewomen. This game marks the 1st Annual deBeer's East/West Challenge and is also the Cardinal's first game versus a ranked opponent this season.

Syracuse got the game going at 4:53 into the first half with a goal by sophomore Leigh-Ann Zimmer and then another at 5:03 by junior Jessica Trombley. After the second Syracuse goal the scoring went back and forth, with two goals by Cardinal sophomore Jess Scott (one goal at 5:26 and another at 7:48), until the Orangewomen took charge with four straight goals starting at 12:05. Stanford answered with a goal at 29:25 by freshman Julia Calzonetti to put score at 8-4 going into halftime.

The Cardinal came out strong at the beginning of the second half lowering the Syracuse lead to three, with a goal by freshman Alessandra Salatti at 39 seconds into the half. The Orangewomen came back with another goal that was also quickly answered by the Cardinal with a goal by senior tri-captain Liz Britt. With the score now at 9-6, Syracuse added two more goals to bring their lead back to five. Stanford freshman Kelsey Twist put in a goal at 14:47 into the half to get the Cardinal back within striking distance, but the Orangewomen found their rhythm and came back with another four consecutive goals, bringing the score to 15-7. Stanford scored the final two goals to close out the game but they could not overcome the deficit. Junior Rachael Neumann played the first half for the Cardinal recording four saves in goal and junior Virginia Solomon came in during the second half and made 11 saves.

This game was the Cardinal's first loss of the season giving them a 2-1 record overall this season, they remain undefeated in league play. Syracuse is now 1-0 overall this season, 0-0 Big East. Stanford continues their four-game home stretch with a game next Saturday, March 2 at 1pm. They will take on the Cornell Big Red on Maloney Field.
