The Cardinal sailors had a full weekend of competition for the last of their regattas before spring break training and competition. Stanford hosted the McIntyre Team Race Intersectional, traveled to Treasure Island for the Cal Team Race, and sent a women's team to the Charleston Spring Women's Intersectional hosted by the College of Charleston in South Carolina.
On their home waters in Redwood City, the Cardinal team saw a wide range of conditions varying from very light winds on Saturday to winds nearing 18 knots on Sunday. The team of Taylor Grimes '09, Carolyn Prioleau '12, Peter Stemler '10, Laura Lilly '12, Cole Hatton '11, and Kelly McKenna '09 finished third in the ten-team field. Competing in a full round robin, a final six round robin and eventually a final four, the Stanford team went 11-6, tying second-place UCI. Ordinarily the rules would call for a sail-off to break the tie, though since there was no time at the end of racing on Sunday the scorers resorted to head-to-head records. The Cardinal also managed to take a win off Navy, the winners of the event.
A young team traveled the short distance to compete in the Cal Team Race hosted out of the 2009 Team Racing National Championships site, Treasure Island. Justin Doane '12, Alex Dunlap '11, Nick Dugdale '12, Hayley Tobin `11, Oliver Riihiluoma '12, and Ariane Fisher '12 won the event with a near perfect 14-1 record in the six-team field. The underclassmen squad bested CMA, who were 12-3, and Cal, who went 10-5, among other conference teams.
The next weekend of team racing competition is the final weekend of the team's spring break, March 28-29, when two teams will compete. One team will be at Old Dominion University in Virginia for the Aaron Szambecki Intersectional Team Race, and another will be at the first ever California State Team Race Championship hosted by USC. The Cal State Team Race Championship will serve as a qualifier for the Pacific Coast Conference Team Race Championship.
The women's team competed in the Charleston Women's Spring Intersectional over the weekend to round out three consecutive trips to the College of Charleston by Stanford teams. Hannah Burroughs '11 and Catherine Cu '09 sailed in A division and Megan Grove '10 and Laura Garvey '12 sailed in B division. The team experienced abundant sunshine, good wind, and the infamous Charleston current. The Lady Cardinal were 12th overall, 12th in A division, and 8th in B division. The team members all agreed that the regatta was a terrific learning experience, and they look forward to competing against the steep competition again.
Next up for the Cardinal will be the Truxtun Umsted Regatta, a premiere four-division coed intersectional hosted by Navy, and the St. Mary's Women's Intersectional, the premiere mid-season women's intersectional, both to be hosted the weekend of March 21-22. The following week the team will have spring break training at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
