STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford ranked 21st in The Associated Press' Top 25 preseason poll released Saturday and is one of three Pac-12 Conference programs among the rankings. This marks the 32nd straight week Stanford has been ranked among the AP's Top 25, tied for the ninth longest streak in the nation, dating back to Sept. 5, 2010. The Cardinal had been ranked 23 consecutive weeks in the Top 10 of the AP poll.

Stanford has been ranked in the preseason AP poll 16 times, while the Cardinal appeared in a program-best 43 straight weekly polls from 1969-72.

Riding the wave of back-to-back BCS bowl appearances, the Cardinal was tabbed 18th in last week's USA Today Sports Coaches poll.

Now in the midst of training camp, Stanford returns 48 letterwinners from last year's Fiesta Bowl squad, including 28 on offense, 27 on defense and three specialists. Included in the group are 15 players who started seven or more games last season.

Stanford finished the 2011 season with an 11-2 overall record and an 8-1 mark in Pac-12 play to place second in the league's North Division. The Cardinal has compiled a 31-8 (.795) record over the last three seasons, finishing 8-5 in 2009, 12-1 in 2010 and 11-2 last season. The Cardinal's 31 wins rank second only to Oregon's 34 among Pac-12 teams during the three-season stretch, while Stanford's .795 winning percentage ranks eighth among all FBS teams.

Stanford is one of just six teams in the nation that has compiled 23 or more wins over the last two seasons, along with Boise State (24), TCU (24), Oregon (24), LSU (24) and Oklahoma State (23). The Cardinal's .885 winning percentage over the last two seasons is tied for fifth-best among FBS teams during that stretch.

The Cardinal kick off the 2012 season Aug. 31 while playing host to San Jose State in the annual Bill Walsh Legacy Game at Stanford Stadium. The 7:00 p.m. (PT) contest will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
