Norfolk, VA - Representing a field of over 200 college sailors from six districts around the United States, the top 16 in both men and women's divisions competed in the Vanguard Sailboats/Intercollegiate Sailing Association's Singlehanded National Championship at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia November 16-18. Cardinal Sailors Dave Kenny '03 and Ashley Frush '04 both qualified from the Pacific Coast District, making Stanford one of the elite six schools to qualify in both divisions (Old Dominion, College of Charleston, Connecticut College, Harvard and U Washington).
Kenny took the opportunity to train in Lasers for this event at the Danmark Trophy at Coast Guard, Navy Fall and the North/South Pacific Championship finishing 2nd, 5th and 3rd respectively in very competitive fleets. At the Nationals, Kenny saw the same competitors he had beaten at the previous Laser regattas. However, Kenny's first four races did not see him break into the top 10, and although he came back later in the 16-race regatta to earn a 4, 7, 1, 4, 5, it was not enough to drag him up higher than 8th in the 16-boat fleet.
Frush had also taken the opportunity to train for this regatta when she competed in Laser Radials at the Navy Fall Women's Championship - earning a 5th and helping the Stanford Women's Sailors earn a 5th overall at that major fall regatta. At this past weekend's National Champs, Frush had a hard time breaking into the top ten, managing best finishes of 7, 8, 9, 9, and 3 tenth places. She finished 13 of the tough 16-boat fleet.
The Cardinal Sailors are currently ranked nationally as 13th in Co-ed and 8th in Women's (of over 250 College Sailing Teams). As the Stanford Sailors go into their winter hiatus, they are thinking ahead to sailing in preparation for June's Co-ed, Women's and Team Race National Championships (hosted by U Hawaii). Their season resumes in February.
