Stanford Overpowers Denver, 16-5

DENVER, Colo. - Lakewood, Colo. native Abbi Hills scored six goals as the Stanford Cardinal shot-down the University of Denver women's lacrosse team, 16-5, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action on Sunday, March 28th at Pioneer Field. The win marked the Cardinal's third this week. With the win, Stanford improves to 6-4 on the season, and 4-0 in MPSF play. With their fourth-consecutive loss the Pioneers fall to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the MPSF action.

Sophomore Megan Burker notched three goals and one assist, while junior Julie Calzonetti and freshman Michelle DeChant each scored two goals for the Cardnial, who clinch the number one seed in this season's MPSF Championship.

Stanford jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with 28:37 to go in the first half on senior Kim Cahill's goal. After a goal by Denver's Tara Bourdelaise tied the match at 1-1. The Cardinal would score seven unanswered goals over the next 15 minutes to take control of the match. During that run, Burker scored her three goals, while Hills chipped in two. Also adding goals for the Cardinal were sophomore Sarah Bach and junior Claire Calzonetti.

Julia Calzonetti and Hills would add goals to end the first half and give Stanford a 10-4 advantage heading into the break.

The Cardinal notched three more goals in the final nine minutes to walk away with the victory.

The Cardinal remained aggressive after intermission, outscoring the Pioneers, 6-1. While the defense was clamping down on the Pioneers, the Cardinal's offense was clicking on all cylinders, scoring three goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half and three more in the last nine minutes of the game.

Hills added three more goals in the second half, while Dechant scored two goals and Julia Calzonetti chipped in one.

Christina Saikus picked up the win in the cage for Stanford, registering 10 saves.

Denver junior goalkeeper Steph Schneider suffered the loss in goal. Her 23 saves rank tied for third all-time on Denver's single-game record chart. Her 26 saves at Cal earlier this season (Feb. 22) rank first all-time.

The Cardinal return to The Farm to play host to Cal on April, 2 at 7:30 pm at Maloney Field.
