STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 14 ranked Stanford University women's lacrosse team fell to the No. 17 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 16-5 Sunday afternoon at Maloney Field. With the loss, the Cardinal fall to 3-2 on the season, while the Irish improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Irish dominated both halves of action, scoring eight goals before intermission and another eight after the break. Notre Dame blitzed the Cardinal, scoring six unanserwed goals to start the game, capped by a score by Abby Owen. An unassisted goal by Stanford junior Nina Pantano got the Cardinal on the board in the 21st minute of the game.
After a score by the Irish made the score 7-1, junior midfielder Kelsey Twist found freshman Michelle De Chant for the Cardinal's second goal of the game. The Cardinal would trim the Notre Dame's lead to four at 7-3, when sophomore Megan Burker found the back of the cage with just over five minutes remaining in the first half.
With the Irish leading the game, 8-3 going into halftime, the Cardinal started the second half aggressive, striking for an early goal by senior Abbi Hills, cutting the Irish advantage to 8-4. The Irish responded with six consecutive unanswered goals, putting the game out of reach for the Cardinal at 14-4.
Burker would add an unassisted goal for Stanford with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation, but once again, the Irish had an answer, netting two goals in the final seven minutes of the game.
Burker led the Cardinal with two scores, while Hills, Pantano, and DeChant also added scores for Stanford. The Irish were led by Meredith Simon and Owen, who each scored four goals.
The Cardinal are back in action on March 7th when they host No. 16 Vanderbilt at Maloney Field for the East/West Challenge.
