Courtesy: Stanford Athletics
Release: 05/16/2000

May 16, 2000

Join the Stanford Synchronized Swimming Team and the USA Olympic Team for an evening of culinary and champagne celebration at the "Evening of Champions" Saturday, May 20 at the Avery Aquatics Center beginning at 4:30 p.m. The event will feature the National Runner-up Stanford Synchronized Swimming Team and the Olympic-bound USA Olympic Team, as well as a live auction and music. There will be a special guest performance by Bill May and Kristina Lum.

The USA Synchronized Swimming Team has already earned a berth to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney after placing fourth at the 2000 Olympic Qualifying Open. Former Stanford athlete Heather Pease-Olson and US teammate Tammy Cleland-McGregor also qualified to compete in the Olympics in the duet competition after placing fifth at the Qualifying Open. Stanford grad Bridget Finn will also compete for the USA Team in Sydney.

Bill May and duet partner Kristina Lum will make a special guest performance. The duo made history as May became the first man ever to win a national title in Synchronized Swimming when the pair won the National Championship in 1998. They also won the 1998 Goodwill Games. Despite the duo's success in the pool, they can not compete in the Olympics because FINA defines the sport as "women's synchronized swimming." The duet will make a guest performance at the "Evening of Champions."

The Stanford Synchronized Swimming Team finished in second place at the National Championships in March with 89 points. The team finished behind Ohio State, which recorded 95 points to win the championship. Cardinal Shannon Montague took first place in the solo final with 96.6 points. Montague and Julie Enos took second in the duet final with 94.267 points.

The "Evening of Champions" will be held Saturday, May 20 from 4:30 to 7:30 pm at the Avery Aquatic Center on the Stanford University campus. Donations are tax deductible. For more information, please call (650) 725-0128.
