Berkeley, Calif. - The Cardinal women's lacrosse team fell to Bay Area rival Cal this afternoon by a tough 9-6 decision in Berkeley. Stanford was defeated by the Bears for only the second time in the last 11 meetings between the two teams. With the loss, Stanford evens its record at 1-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Cal is now 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the MPSF.
Stanford was led in scoring by sophomore attacker Daphne Patterson, who notched three goals on the afternoon and collected three ground balls. Senior Sarah Bach added her 72nd career goal for the Cardinal while freshman Maris Perlman netted the first of her career. Freshman Bis Fries also contributed to the scoring for Stanford with a goal in the 52nd minute.
Cal started off the scoring early in the match when Bear junior Liz Reifsnyder scored an unassisted goal in the fourth minute. Reifsnyder's goal was followed by another unassisted goal in the fifth minute by senior Leanne Zilioli, giving Cal a 2-0 lead. The Cardinal battled back, however, overwhelming the Bears with four goals in a seven-minute span to take a 4-2 lead. Patterson scored two goals during the run while Bach and Perlman each contributed a goal as well.
Late in the half, however, Cal freshman Sam Price netted a goal to restart the Bear scoring. Senior Schuyler Sokolow then tied the match with a free position shot with 46 seconds left in the first period. The teams went to the locker room with the score knotted at 4-4.
Cal came out with energy in the second half, however, bombarding the Cardinal with five goals in the first 15 minutes of play. The Cardinal attempted a comeback, with late goals by Fries and Patterson but the effort was not enough to overcome the deficit. Cal was led in scoring by Reifsnyder who had three goals on the afternoon.
