May 4, 2006

The NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee announced that six Cardinal players were awarded at-large bids for the 2006 NCAA Singles Championship and two pairs were awarded spots in the 2006 NCAA Doubles Championship, both of which will be played at the Taube Tennis Center on the Stanford Campus, beginning on Tuesday, May 23 after the conclusion of the team championship (May 18-22).

Seniors Alice Barnes and Amber Liu were both awarded top seeds, with Barnes securing the No. 7 seed and Liu earning the No. 8 seed. Juniors Theresa Logar and Anne Yelsey were both placed in the 9-16 seeding group, while sophomores Whitney Deason and Celia Durkin were given un-seeded spots in the 64-person tournament field.

Barnes and Yelsey, the No. 1 doubles team in the nation, earned an automatic bid from their Pac-10 Conference title and will be the top seed in the tournament. Durkin and Liu will also compete in the doubles draw.

All matches will be the best of three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games all will be used for all matches.

The selection of teams and individuals for the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships is based on the prescribed criteria listed in the championships handbook and approved by the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet. Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championships will be awarded to any conference with one or more singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for singles. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125, the subcommittee will apply the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championships will be awarded to any conference with one or more doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for doubles. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60, the subcommittee will apply the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences.

Stanford will begin its quest for the NCAA team title next weekend, when the Cardinal hosts Quinnipiac, Brigham Young and Arizona in first and second round action at the Taube Tennis Center, May 12-13.
