STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford women's rowing, ranked fourth in the nation, gets its spring season off and going this weekend with the Pac-10 Women's Challenge at Redwood Shores.
The I Eight, II Eight and Varsity Four crews will race Saturday opposite top-ranked Virginia, then go up against No. 14 UCLA Sunday morning.
"We're fortunate to have excellent competition at Redwood Shores this weekend with Cal, UCLA and Virginia," said Stanford women's rowing head coach Yasmin Farooq. "The goal is to face challenging teams whenever possible and opening the season against the defending national champion is the perfect way to start it."
Third-ranked California will also participate in the women's openweight competition.
"Redwood Shores is one of the most exciting dual race courses in the world. The intimacy of the start area, and the famous starting command of 'Release the rope' is a memory that rowers cherish for decades after racing there," Farooq continued. "We really hope to invite more top-notch teams to the Pac-10 Women's Challenge and to grow the regatta over the next few years."
