Stanford begins a three-game homestand on Maloney Field Wednesday, when they take on the Wildcats of Davidson College. The Cardinal is 4-1 this season after its first lost last Sunday to the 19th ranked George Mason Patriots. Davidson is currently 2-1, coming off a 10-8 win over California on Monday afternoon. Wednesday's game, beginning at 4pm, marks the first contest between these two teams.
Friday March 9, at 3pm, the Cardinal takes on the Vanderbilt Commodores, who finished the 2000 season ranked 13th, with an overall record of 10-6. They started 2001 ranked #13 again, after losing their first match 4-10 to the #3 Georgetown Hoyas.
On Sunday at 1pm, Stanford concludes the homestand against the Bison of Bucknell University. The Bisons are 1-0 this season after a 13-8 loss to American last weekend.
The Cardinal opened the 2001 season with a 7-4 win over Cal-Berkeley, with a standout performance by sophomore goalkeeper Rachael Neumann who recorded 16 saves. They followed it up with two victories at home, a 10-2 win over UC Davis and a 9-8 win over St. Mary's. Last weekend Stanford split two games at Pioneer Field in Denver. On Saturday, they won a close game versus Denver 12-11, and then lost on Sunday, 12-8, against #19 George Mason. Saturday's match-up saw a double hat trick by the team, with both junior tri-captain Caroline Osterwise and Abbi Hills tallying 3 goals.
Three-year WWLL Champions, the Cardinal is looking to repeat its success this year under first-year head coach Michele Uhlfelder (Maryland `91). The combination of experience and fresh talent have helped the team this season to adapt to changes in coaching and in the schedule. Leading the team on offense are senior tri-captain Katharine Barnes and freshman Abbi Hills, who each have nine goals this season.
