Stanford, Calif. - Burnham Pavilion was the place to be on Friday night, as the 2007 men's gymnastics team kicked off the season with an exciting competition against some of the former Stanford greats. The crowd was buzzing the entire night as the alumni put together some phenomenal routines. The meet was also a chance for the current varsity team to work out some kinks and receive scores from an actual judge.
Junior Jason Shen was the only member of the current squad to get work on every apparatus. He was able to place first for the team on the parallel bars with an 8.6 and also placed second on the floor exercise with a graceful, yet powerful performance, earning a score of 8.8. Junior Eli Alcaraz had the high score of the day for the 2007 team with an creative performance on the floor exercise, posting a 9.2. Senior Alex Schorsch turned in a masterful performance on the rings, scoring a 9.1 to lead the team.
One of the best parts of the meet was the performances of the future Cardinal greats from JDR Gymnastics Club. These future stars were able to handle the pressure of the competition and turn in flawless routines in each event.
Stanford opens regular season competition Friday, January 19 (7:30pm) at Cal. The Cardinal defeated Cal twice last season, 205.650 to 205.550 and 210.700 to 209.950.
