STANFORD, Calif. - Hello Stanford fans,
This past week was another great week in the gym and on the competition floor with SWG. Coming off our win over previously #1 ranked UCLA in a packed Burnham Pavilion, we still knew we had some things to clean up and improve upon. The short week in the gym was a productive one as we worked on cast handstands, landings, and approaching our sets with aggressiveness and confidence.
After two weekends in a row at home, we got to travel to Corvallis, Oregon, last Friday to compete against OSU in a tri-meet with Seattle Pacific. It was their breast cancer awareness meet, so the crowd could buy pink shirts and all the proceeds went toward Project H.E.R. The spectators and teams were donned in pink attire, which was fun to see, especially for such a great cause. We started on bars and led off with solid work from Shelley and Nicole P., along with great routines from Allyse and Carly in the back. It was also exciting to see Nicole D. make her collegiate debut! We moved to beam next and made some good strides from the previous weekend. Highlights on beam included Allyse and Carly's beautiful routines, as well as Dani's big hit following a fall. We kept it rolling to floor and did an awesome job of showing off our dance and drawing in the crowd. Nicole P.'s routine was out of this world, with great eye contact and attitude to boot, and Ash's energetic set was lights out. Can I also note that I wish I could tumble half as high as Tenaya can? :)
Vault was our last rotation, and we had a string of solid vaults capped off by Shelley Jo's huge stuck FTY in the sixth spot. Allie also made her collegiate debut in exhibition, which was super exciting! Unfortunately we came up short in the end, and OSU ended up winning with SPU coming in third. Many parents came out to the meet, so we got to spend time with them at dinner following the competition. Unfortunately, we had to get up at the crack of dawn the next morning to make our flight back to the Farm, but interestingly unique dance moves from Allie and Carly in the hotel room the night before made it all worth while ;) I wish I could attach a video to this thing. They were GOOD... haha!
We've talked a lot this year about focusing on what we can control, in particular our confidence and our gymnastics, and I think we did a very good job of not letting ourselves get distracted this weekend. Gill Coliseum is a fun environment to compete in with over 6,000 avid gymnastics fans, but it is a difficult arena to compete in as well. Throughout the entire meet, we kept our energy focused on ourselves. We've addressed the areas we still need to improve on and are looking forward to making those changes in practice this week.
This Sunday, we have another home meet against Washington, San Jose State, and Sacramento State. We're definitely excited to be back in Burnham and can't wait to hopefully show off some upgrades and new routines. The meet starts at 2 p.m., and admission is free. Hope to see you there :) Thanks for stopping by!
