Celia Durkin (Los Angeles, CA/Calabasas) of the Stanford Women's Tennis Team was selected as the Stanford/MET-Rx Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 10-Jan. 16.
Durkin captured the singles title last Sunday at the Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships, scoring a 6-2, 6-0 win over UCLA's Laura Gordon. Durkin knocked off UNLV's Elena Gantcheva on her home court in the quarterfinals, fighting off a match point to force a third-set tiebreaker and ultimately prevail 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4). A transfer from Harvard, Durkin was the 2005 Ivy League Rookie of the Year.
This is Durkin's first Stanford/MET-Rx Student-Athlete of the Week honor. The Cardinal Women's Tennis Team will be back in action at home versus Hawai'i on Thursday, January 26 (3:00 pm).
