Ojai, Calif. - Stanford's top-ranked tandem of Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey closed out the final day of play at the 2006 Pac-10 Championships with an 8-4 victory over Cal's Suzi Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor for their second-straight conference doubles title and their third title of the season.
Barnes and Yelsey, who paired up for the first time for last year's Pac-10 title run, are now 40-3 this season and have captured the ITA National Indoors Championship, the Freeman Memorial title and the Pac-10 Championship.
The duo earned a bye in the opening round, then posted an 8-6 victory in the quarterfinals over un-ranked Elizabeth Lumpkin and Alex McGoodwin of UCLA and an 8-3 win over No. 21 Roxanne Clarke and Kady Pooler of Arizona State to earn a spot in today's finals. Barnes and Yelsey tacked on the 8-4 decision over the 11th-ranked Golden Bear pair to capture the conference crown.
It is the third Pac-10 doubles title for Barnes, who won with Stanford graduate Erin Burdette in 2004 and with Yelsey in 2005.
In the Pac-10 Invitational title match this morning, 76th-ranked Jessica Nguyen lost a three-set match to No. 105 Ashley Joelson of UCLA.
