STANFORD, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Stanford softball team hits the road this week with its first stop at San Jose State on Tuesday, Apr. 17. The Cardinal and Spartans will square off at 4 p.m. PT at SJSU Field.
Last week, Stanford (32-12, 6-9 Pac-12) posted a 4-2 record which included a sweep of No. 25 Oregon State for its first Pac-12 Conference series win. Leading the team offensively against the Beavers were seniors Jenna Becerra, Maya Burns and Ashley Hansen. Burns got things going on Friday, hitting a grand slam to capture the lead for Stanford. It was the first long ball of the season for Burns and just the second of her career.
Becerra followed up by hitting two grand slams of her own on Saturday and Sunday. It marks the first time in school history that a Cardinal player has hit a grand slam in back-to-back games.
Not to be outdone, Hansen broke the school record for triples in a single season as she recorded her seventh against the Beavers. It was also the 17th of her career, which ties Catalina Morris for the most in program history. Hansen finished the week with a team-best .471 average with three doubles, a triple and two home runs.
San Jose State (22-20, 6-4 WAC) split a double-header last weekend against Fresno State in San Jose. The Spartans dropped a 1-0 decision in the first game, but bounded back to top the Bulldogs, 2-1, in game two. Shortstop BranDee Garcia hit a two-run single to propel the Spartans to victory.
Following Tuesday's contest, Stanford will travel to Tempe, Ariz., for a three-game conference series, Apr. 20-22, at third-ranked Arizona State (36-5, 8-2 Pac-12). Friday and Saturday's games are slated for 7 p.m. PT, while Sunday's match-up will being at Noon at Farrington Stadium.
