Box Score

STANFORD, Calif. -- No. 10 Stanford improved to 24-3 by taking a doubleheader from Texas A&M Corpus Christi 2-1 and 8-0 (five innings) Monday afternoon at the Stanford Softball Complex. The Islanders fall to 8-21-1.

The visitors got on the board quickly in game one. Freshman Christen Cook hit a triple to right-center on the game's second pitch and scored on a passed ball. That was the only run Stanford freshman Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA/Scripps Ranch HS) would allow, however.

The Cardinal got the run back in the bottom of the first. Senior Kellie Wiginton (Fresno, CA/Bullard HS) singled to center to lead off the inning, then sophomore Robin Walker (La Palma, CA/Mater Dei HS) singled to left. Sophomore Sarah Beeson (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro HS) drove Wiginton home with a single to center. Stanford got another run in the third when sophomore Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo, CA/Camarillo HS) singled to center with two out, stole second, and scored on Beeson's double to right-center. Beeson finished 3-for-3 with both RBI in the 2-1 win and Sorensen (12-3) gave up only two hits, both to Cook, for the complete-game victory. Amanda Burton fell to 5-11 for the Islanders.

Stanford's offense came alive in game two. Wiginton got to second base opening the first inning when the left-fielder misplayed her liner. Walker singled to second for an RBI, Mendoza drew a walk and Beeson was hit by a pitch. Freshman Kira Ching (San Lorenzo, CA/Arroyo HS) hit a two-run single to right-center, and Beeson scored on a passed ball. The Cardinal padded that 4-0 lead in the second. Junior Ramona Shelburne (West Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) reached on an error to open the frame, then Wiginton singled sharply to left-center. Walker drove Shelburne home with a single to center, and advanced to second when Wiginton was thrown out at third. Walker then scored on Mendoza's double to make it 6-0. The hit extended Mendoza's hitting streak to 15 games.

The Cardinal added two more in the fourth. Shelburne reached on an error, and Wiginton singled to center. Both advanced on a passed ball, and Walker hit a two-run double to left-center. Walker finished 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs.

In the circle, freshman Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA/Carlmont HS) improved to 3-0 by allowing one hit and one walk in four innings. Freshman Maureen LeCocq (Woodland Hills, CA/Chaminade Prep) got three outs in the fifth to finish the game, which was called due to the eight-run rule. Melanie Drews fell to 3-9 for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Stanford returns to action with a doubleheader at Pacific Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. The Islanders visit No. 7 Fresno State Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
